Resume Format Guide for Pakistan (2026)

There are three standard resume formats — reverse-chronological, functional, and hybrid — and for 95% of Pakistani job seekers the answer is reverse-chronological: your most recent work first, education after experience (or before it, for freshers). This guide covers the exact section order, length rules, and formatting details Pakistani recruiters and ATS software expect.

The standard section order

For experienced candidates, order sections by what the recruiter wants first: contact details, professional summary, work experience, skills, education, then optional sections (certifications, projects, languages). For fresh graduates, education moves up: contact, summary or objective, education, projects and internships, skills.

Which format type to choose

Reverse-chronological is the default and what every ATS parses best. The functional format (skills-first, hiding dates) is widely treated as a red flag — recruiters assume employment gaps. The hybrid format (a strong skills block above chronological experience) works for career-switchers and IT professionals whose stack matters more than their last title.

Employment gaps are better handled honestly in the chronological format — a one-line explanation (further study, family responsibility, freelancing) beats a format designed to hide them.

Length, fonts, and file rules

One page for under 5 years of experience; two pages maximum after that. Medical and academic CVs are the exception — they run longer by convention.

Use one standard font (Arial, Calibri, Helvetica, or Georgia) at 10–12pt body size, single column, black on white. Export as PDF unless the employer explicitly requests Word — PDF preserves your layout on every device.

Photo, age, and personal details — Pakistani conventions

Corporate, tech, and multinational applications: no photo, no date of birth, no marital status, no father's name, no CNIC. These conventions have shifted — modern Pakistani employers neither expect nor want them, and international remote employers may auto-reject resumes carrying them.

Exceptions where a photo is still commonly expected: teaching positions at some school networks, front-desk and cabin crew roles, and some government forms which have their own prescribed formats anyway. When in doubt, leave it out.

Frequently asked questions

Should my resume be one page or two in Pakistan?+

One page under 5 years of experience, two pages maximum beyond that. Recruiters spend under 30 seconds on a first scan — density and relevance beat completeness.

CV or resume — which does Pakistan use?+

The words are used interchangeably in Pakistan; job ads asking for a 'CV' expect exactly the 1–2 page document this guide describes. True long-format CVs only apply to academic and medical careers.

Should I include references?+

No, and don't write 'references available on request' — it's assumed. Use the space for an extra achievement bullet instead.

Is a Word file or PDF better?+

PDF, always, unless the job ad explicitly demands .docx. PDFs preserve formatting; modern ATS software parses them reliably.
