Sales Interview Questions & Answers

Sales interviews are performances: the interviewer is watching whether you sell yourself the way you'd sell the product. FMCG distributors, pharma field forces, banks, and B2B companies in Pakistan all circle the same core questions — targets, rejection, and the inevitable roleplay.

1Sell me this pen. (or any object on the table)

The tested skill is need discovery, not description. Ask questions first: "When did you last write something down? What do you use daily?" Then connect features to their stated need, handle one objection, and close with a direct ask. Jumping straight into praising the pen is the classic fail; a strong candidate might even conclude the customer doesn't need this pen but needs something else — that's real selling.

2Tell me about a time you missed your target. What did you do?

Never claim you've never missed — it reads as either dishonesty or untested easy targets. Structure: the shortfall and context, your diagnosis (route coverage? conversion? market factor?), the specific change you made, and the recovery numbers. Sales managers are hiring the recovery reflex, not a perfect record.

3How do you handle rejection — a retailer or client who says no?

Separate the person from the no, log the reason, and schedule the return visit — "no" in territory sales usually means "not this visit." Give a real example: a retailer converted after four visits by solving their actual concern (credit terms, shelf space, slow-moving stock swap). Persistence with a method, not just thick skin, is the answer.

4How would you plan a new territory in your first 30 days?

Show a system: map the universe of outlets/clients, classify by potential (A/B/C), audit current coverage and credit health, ride along with the existing booker or review records, then set a route plan that hits A-class outlets at the right frequency. Closing with "and I'd set a baseline in month one so growth is measurable" signals exactly the discipline hiring managers want.

5A client demands a discount you're not authorised to give. What do you do?

Never overpromise: hold the line while protecting the relationship. Reframe value (margins, movement, support), offer what you can control (payment terms, merchandising, scheme timing), and escalate genuinely strategic cases with a recommendation rather than just passing the problem up. Interviewers are checking both your authority discipline and your creativity within limits.

6Why sales? Many people see it as a fallback career.

Kill the fallback frame with conviction and numbers: sales is the revenue engine, the fastest feedback loop in business, and the career where output is measurable and rewarded. If you have a story — a family shop, a university fundraiser you crushed, commission you earned — tell it. Half-hearted answers end sales interviews faster than any wrong technique.
